             THE PURPOSE DRIVEN PEN

“E ka mamako, e muku lalakwan. E ka tatangis, mibalik ku naman”, famous lines from a classical Kapampangan folksong.  This is a mortal supplication reaching the high heavens begging not to leave someone or someplace dearest to the heart.

In paraphrase, leaving his birthplace brought him closer to his native Nazareth.  Antonio Mercado Peña left his native Sasmuan (formerly Sexmoan) at 22 years old.  He found work, contracted marriage, established a family in  Bicolandia,  assimilating a new and different culture over time.

This 24-karat Mekeni Abe proudly says: “Likwan ke ing Balen kung Tibwan, e neman mengalingwan ing pluma ku king Amanung Siswan.”   Having settled in diaspora for the next 36 years, geographically far away from his home province, he sought refuge to his pen, keeping him tenaciously bonded with what is native in him.  His Kawatasan is read and acclaimed via the world wide web not only within the confines of the Kapampangan nation but also by compatriots residing in America, Canada, Europe and the rest of the globe.

Tony’s “poesyang melalang king Amanung Siswan” depicts a soothing amalgam of the “sakdal rima” and the “vers libre” paving a metamorphosis from the traditionally rhymed to the contemporary free verse.

August 31, 2007 was the crowning glory of his pen.  He was awarded First Place in the Tagisan King Poesia at the Bayview Park Hotel, Roxas Blvd., Manila hosted by Gawad Komisyon 2007,  Republika Ng Pilipinas.  His winning entry: “Bulung at iba pang Tula” is a collection of ten (10) selected poems in Kapampangan.  Notably, he introduced a couple of poetic genres: Tanka and Haiku in the vernacular literature.

Our Sasmuan poet likewise won two literary awards in essay writing. His “Thoughts and Impressions on the February 25, 1986 EDSA People Power” won First Place (out of 54 entries) in a Bicol regionwide contest in 1987.  His “Banking to the Letter” was also First Place in a bankwide (including overseas branches) anecdote writing contest conducted by Philippine National Bank in its Diamond Anniversary in 1991.

Tony Mercado PEÑa is undoubtedly more akin to the PEN because his surname bears witness to the meaning and definition of letters.  He is a member of two (2) prestigious literary organizations: the Akademyang Kapampangan (AKKAP) and the United Poets Laureate International (UPLI).

Adding tribute to his maturing pen is his Creative Writing class at U.S.T. under Prof. Ophelia Dimalanta Alcantara, Ph.D.,  a well-known Kapampangan literary guru.

The redeeming literary significance of his pen is to resuscitate back to life, resurrecting his dying language within and outside the Bangsang Kapampangan. His K-poetry is a galvanizing medium, a mighty weapon battling the creeping lingual windmills invading the four quarters of his Indung Tibwan.

On December 11, 2007, another accolade, the most precious and prestigious feather to his cap is the Most Outstanding Kapampangan Award – Culture & the Arts.  The award ceremonies at the Bren Guiao Convention Center complements with the 436th Aldo Ning Kapampangan.

More than 2,000 years ago, a question was asked: “Will nothing good come out of my native Nazareth?”
